Exam format, scoring and preparation

The TEF Canada (Test d’évaluation de français) is an official French-language test used for Canadian immigration and citizenship procedures.

It is designed, developed, and managed by the Paris Île-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI Paris Île-de-France).

It assesses four language skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and oral expression.

How does the scoring work?

Each of the four skills is scored separately. Results are reported on a scale from 0 to 699 and converted into a CEFR level (A1–C2) and an NCLC level for each skill.

The oral expression test is assessed by two independent examiners: the examiner conducting the test and a second evaluator who assesses the recording. A standardized evaluation grid is used. The assessment considers the quality and effectiveness of communication, as well as vocabulary, grammar, organization, fluency and pronunciation.

The written expression test consists of two sections. Section A asks you to continue an article (80 words minimum), while Section B asks you to express and justify a point of view (200 words minimum). The test lasts 60 minutes.

B2 is the target level for many TEF Canada candidates. The main objective is simple: express and develop your ideas clearly. You don't need complicated structures or long sentences, quite the opposite. What matters is being clear, organized and convincing.
